British authorities detained a record number of 828 migrants who tried to enter the country illegally through the English Channel that separates Britain from the European continent (France).
And Sky News, citing data from the British Home Office, said that "the British authorities intercepted a record 828 immigrants in the English Channel on Saturday," noting that the French authorities also arrested 193 illegal immigrants on the same day.
It was reported that the previous record was set on August 12, when the British authorities managed to intercept 592 immigrants in one day.
It is noteworthy that illegal immigrants often look for any opportunity to cross the English Channel, and end up in the United Kingdom, enticed by a social program, the possibility of obtaining refugee status, and financial benefits.
Britain and France had agreed last July to strengthen the fight against illegal immigration. The document provided, in particular, to double the number of police officers who patrol the French shores in order to prevent boats from leaving the French coast of the Strait.
